What were the roles and responsibilities of women? What restrictions did women face? How did social class affect a woman’s opportunities? Women in Victorian society had very limited options. They did not have equal rights, they had limited education opportunities. They also did not have full legal rights and due to this limitations many women fought for change. This was rise of Feminism and women’s suffrage. They were limited to just having children and raising children and taking care of the home. They were unable to hold jobs except teaching the younger ones. They were more or less considered property rather then human beings. Everything was controlled by the husbands. The women’s movement was influenced by the Evangelical movement which allowed women to have more equal rights and say in the society. For example in Quaker’s society the women were allowed to preach; however this was looked down upon by many victorian era male writers such as Charles Dickens who saw the Evangelicals as a threat to the stable home-life. Women’s roles were to be the captain of the home and organize to make the home comfortable for the husband and there children. In wealthy home this was include managing household servants, organizing parties and dinners, and taking care of sick family member. Women were also restricted by the moral values of victorian society since they were considered property of their husbands. They were no make up allowed and they wore full body clothing that showed very little skin. This reflected the ideal of a pure women. Women were considered inferior to men in their intellect. Science during victorian era totally ignored women and had no mention of them which infuriated many women and led many to seek better education of which did not exists at the time. Women who wanted to advance their education were looked down upon the society. Victorian era society believed that teaching children were the main goal of women and that higher education was unnecessary and actually made women ill. A women was suppose to be obedient to their husband.
